Volcano Boarding on Cerro Negro

Hike to the summit of one of the world's youngest and most active volcanoes, then ride a plywood board down a 40-degree slope of loose volcanic ash at speeds reaching 95km/h, a descent so steep and fast that the ash sprays up around you like black snow. Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro near Leon is the world's most unusual extreme sport, and the views from the summit of this raw, smoking cone across the Pacific lowlands and volcanic chain of northwestern Nicaragua make the hike as rewarding as the descent.

Cerro Negro erupted most recently in 1999 and will erupt again. The youngest volcano in Central America, formed in 1850, a geological eyeblink, it has been active 23 times since then. The evidence is everywhere on the surface of the cone: fresh volcanic material, black and loose, with no vegetation except sparse grass at the base. Steam vents hiss near the summit. The air smells of sulphur. This is a live volcano and hiking it feels like it.

The hike to the summit takes roughly 45 minutes. The lower slopes are relatively gentle through loose scoria and black ash; the upper section steepens considerably, and the loose material underfoot means two steps forward and one step back in places. Your board, strapped to your back, adds to the effort. The summit arrives at 728 metres with views that justify every step: the volcanic chain of Nicaragua stretching along the Pacific coast, Momotombo rising above Lake Managua to the east, the Pacific glittering to the west, and the active crater below you steaming gently in the morning air.

You will be wearing an orange or yellow jumpsuit that is, frankly, unbecoming. Goggles and gloves complete the ensemble. Your guide demonstrates the boarding position: feet on the board for a sit-down descent, body leaning slightly back, arms using the board’s side ropes for steering. The alternative position, for those who want maximum speed, is lying flat on your front in what is essentially a luge position.

The gradient at the top is approximately 40 degrees. It takes a specific act of will to push off.

Then the ash becomes a blur. The volcanic material on the steeper upper sections is fine and light, and the board planes across it in a way that builds speed quickly. The rooster tail of black ash spraying behind you is visible in the photographs your guide takes from below. The wind in your goggles is significant. The ride from summit to base takes around a minute and covers 728 vertical metres. At the bottom, you stand up: ash-covered from head to foot, jumpsuit blackened, grinning in a way that takes several hours to fully subside.

Practical notes: The ash gets everywhere regardless of the jumpsuit. Sealed goggles are essential. Bring clothes that you do not mind getting permanently blackened for the bus ride back. Cameras and phones should be in secure ziplock bags for the descent.

Best time to visit: Volcano boarding operates year-round, but the dry season (November through April) offers the most reliable trail conditions and clearest summit views. The wet season makes the trail more challenging to hike and the descent potentially faster, wet ash compresses differently than dry. The experience is closed during periods of elevated volcanic activity, which operators monitor continuously.

Who it’s for: Anyone in good physical health aged 12 and over. The hike requires reasonable fitness, it is steep and involves carrying a board. No prior boarding or skiing experience is required. This is one of Central America’s most accessible extreme sports at an exceptionally accessible price point.
