The safari lodge is not an airport hotel. The 200-kilometre gap between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara, or the bush strip that serves a single lodge in the Selous, is not an inconvenience to be minimised — it is part of the journey. Understanding how African bush travel actually works turns the logistical complexity into one of the best parts of the trip.

The fundamental structure of an East African safari itinerary is: international flight to a gateway city (Nairobi, Kigali, Dar es Salaam), domestic flight or overland transfer to the park or reserve, and then a lodge ground transfer from the airstrip. Each of these three legs has its own logic and requires its own preparation.


The International Flight: Gateway Cities

Nairobi (NBO) — East Africa’s Hub

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the most connected East African gateway:

Kigali (KGL) — Rwanda and Central Africa

Rwanda’s capital has quietly become one of Africa’s best-connected airports, driven by RwandAir’s ambitious expansion:

  • From Brussels: Brussels Airlines direct (nonstop, 8h)
  • From Dubai: RwandAir direct
  • From Nairobi: Multiple daily services, 1h15m

For gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park (Bisate Lodge), Kigali is the only sensible entry point.

Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro (JRO) — Tanzania

Tanzania has two main gateways depending on your itinerary:

  • Dar es Salaam (DAR): For Selous, Ruaha, Zanzibar, and southern Tanzania. Connects from London (KLM/Precision Air via Amsterdam or Nairobi), Dubai (Emirates), and Addis Ababa (Ethiopian)
  • Kilimanjaro (JRO): For the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara). Connects from Amsterdam (KLM direct), Nairobi, Addis Ababa

The Domestic Leg: Light Aircraft is the Standard

Between the international airport and the safari camp, the standard transfer in Kenya and Tanzania is a light aircraft: a 6–12-seat Cessna or Beechcraft that lands on a grass or dirt airstrip within walking distance of your lodge.

This is not a concession or a budget compromise. It is the established transport infrastructure of East African safari travel. The alternative — overland from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara, for example — takes 5–7 hours on variable road quality; the aircraft takes 45 minutes and lands within 5 minutes of most camps. When you are paying $500–2,000 per night for a safari camp, the marginal cost of the bush flight is not the place to economise.

Key operators:

  • Kenya: Safarilink Aviation, Air Kenya, Fly540. Safarilink has the most extensive Mara and Amboseli network and is consistently the highest quality option.
  • Tanzania: Coastal Aviation (the largest bush flight operator), Grumeti Air (for Singita Grumeti), Regional Air, Auric Air.
  • Rwanda: All gorilla trekking transfers to Volcanoes National Park are ground-based from Kigali; domestic charter options exist.

Booking: Most lodges include bush flight logistics in their package and will advise the best routing. Alternatively, book directly with the operators listed above.

Important: Baggage restrictions on bush planes are strict — most operators impose a 15kg soft bag limit with no hard-sided luggage. This is a hard constraint, not a guideline. Pack a soft duffel; leave your wheeled case at your Nairobi hotel.


Nairobi Layovers: Making the Transit Useful

Most international Safari itineraries overnight in Nairobi before the bush flight connection the following morning. Rather than an airport hotel:

Nairobi best-stay options:

  • Giraffe Centre area (Langata): Karen and Langata suburbs are near the Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (elephant orphanage — reserve your morning spot online before arrival), and Karen Blixen Museum. Boutique guesthouses and garden lodges in these suburbs are quieter and more atmospheric than the central city.
  • Nairobi National Park adjacent: The park’s boundary runs along the southern edge of the city; some lodge accommodation within the park itself offers the surreal experience of watching lion kills with the Nairobi skyline on the horizon.

Nairobi airport transfer: The airport sits 20km from the city — 30 minutes in off-peak, over an hour in Nairobi traffic at 5pm. Rwanda: Gorilla Trekking Logistics

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking circuit is operationally straightforward compared to the multi-leg Kenya/Tanzania safari — the single park (Volcanoes National Park), the single gateway (Kigali), and excellent roads make the logistics manageable.

The sequence:

  1. International flight into Kigali (KGL)
  2. Airport transfer to Kigali hotel (recommended: stay 1 night minimum for acclimatisation and permit briefing)
  3. Ground transfer to lodge near Volcanoes National Park: Bisate Lodge, Wilderness Bisate, Singita Kwitonda. Transfer takes 2.5 hours on excellent paved roads.
  4. Gorilla trekking permit: $1,500 per person per trek (fixed by Rwanda Development Board). Non-negotiable; the permit includes ranger fees, guide, and park entry.

Rekero Camp and Campi ya Kanzi are two distinctly different Mara/Amboseli ecosystem experiences — Rekero is on the Mara River directly at the great migration crossing points; Campi ya Kanzi is in the Chyulu Hills Maasai Conservancy with Kilimanjaro views and more walking safari access.

Tanzania: The Northern Circuit

Tanzania’s Northern Circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara — is typically accessed via Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha. The structure:

  • Neutral colours for game drives: khaki, olive, grey. Avoid white (attracts insects in the savanna) and bright colours
  • Layers: East African mornings on the open vehicle are cold; afternoons are warm. Merino wool base layers work in both
  • Quality binoculars: 8x42 is the standard configuration for safari use
  • Power bank and adaptors: Lodge electricity is often limited and charges time-specific
  • Malaria prophylaxis: Consult your travel medicine clinic before departure; bring your course complete

Photography:

  • Sensor-size matters more than lens length on a vehicle at 5am
  • A dust-proof bag for your camera (East Africa’s tracks generate significant dust)
  • Spare batteries: cold mornings and full-day drives drain batteries faster than usual

Required coverage:

  • Emergency medical evacuation: minimum $100,000 — most quality policies cover $500,000–unlimited
  • Medical expense: minimum $50,000 for Tanzania/Kenya
  • Trip cancellation: relevant if you’ve booked non-refundable high-season lodge nights
