Quirpon Lighthouse Inn (pronounced “kar-poon”) occupies a 1922 light-keeper’s home on Quirpon Island, in Newfoundland and Labrador. Restored by Linkum Tours, it has ten rooms at the base of a lighthouse that is still in operation, on the shores of what the region calls Iceberg Alley. The operator offers it as the quintessential experience of lighthouse life on a deserted island.
The inn
Linkum Tours started in 1998, when its founder Ed English was taken by the notion of owning a piece of Newfoundland heritage: the lighthouse on Quirpon Island. The team made their way through waist-deep spring snow to find the building that became the inn. The inn has ten rooms, and the stay includes all meals.
On the island
The season for iceberg viewing is long and runs into the fall. Guests can also watch whales, and Linkum runs Zodiac tours that get close to icebergs and whales. The island offers hiking and the remains of earlier occupation to explore on foot.
Getting there
A boat takes guests to and from the island, or you can walk 5.5 kilometres from Grandmother’s Cove. Transfers are part of the stay.
Other lighthouse
Linkum Tours also runs a second property, the Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn, a century-old light-keeper’s home, which is a different place from this one.
Ask Linkum about the best weeks for icebergs and whales before choosing your dates, and check the boat transfer times, because the crossing is part of the stay rather than an extra.
