Why it’s on the list

  • Panoramic Machu Picchu views from every room
  • Off-grid, powered by solar lighting
  • Stop on the Salkantay trek
  • Run with a local family
  • Dinner and breakfast included

Machupicchu Ecolodge sits in the rainforest of the Cusco region near Santa Teresa and faces Machu Picchu across the valley. Every room has a panoramic view of Machu Picchu, the green valley below and the surrounding peaks, which is the main reason to stay. The lodge is a stop on the Salkantay trek and is also used by travellers heading to Machu Picchu itself.

Off the grid

The lodge runs on solar power for lighting. There is no internet and no electricity for charging devices, so a stay here means disconnecting for the evening. A hot shower is provided after the day’s walking.

Food and family

The price of the stay includes dinner and breakfast, with regional cuisine. Guests stay with a local family, and the lodge describes its aim as combining comfort, local culture and respect for the environment. Campfires can be arranged for an extra charge.

Getting there

The lodge is a stop on the Salkantay trail, so many guests arrive on foot after days of trekking.

What to expect

It is a simple, remote lodge rather than a resort. The rainforest setting and the Machu Picchu view are the product. If you rely on a phone for navigation or work, plan for that before you arrive, and ask the lodge how best to reach it from your route. The stay includes dinner and breakfast, so you do not need to carry food, and the hot shower at the end of a trekking day is a welcome extra.

What’s included

  • Dinner and breakfast included
  • Hot shower
  • Optional paid campfires
  • Solar lighting
