Why it’s on the list
- Treehouse platform 30 metres above the Amazon canopy
- Access to Tambopata Reserve, one of Earth's most biodiverse areas
- Resident naturalist team with specialist fauna and flora knowledge
- Macaw clay lick and oxbow lake wildlife excursions
The Peruvian Amazon around Puerto Maldonado, specifically the Tambopata National Reserve and its surrounding protected area, is one of the highest-biodiversity ecosystems ever recorded. A single hectare of forest here may contain more species of ant than the entirety of the British Isles contains of all insects combined; a single day’s birding can yield 200 species; a night walk reveals a density of amphibian, reptile, and arthropod life that makes the darkness feel inhabited in ways no temperate landscape can approach. Sleeping in the canopy of this forest, at the level where the light penetrates and the most productive layer of the ecosystem concentrates, is an experience measured in species per hour.
Inkaterra’s canopy treehouse at the Reserva Amazónica is reached by suspension bridge from the main lodge and rises to a platform 30 metres above the forest floor, at the point where the primary canopy closes overhead and the understory below begins to thin. At this height the perspective on the forest reverses: rather than looking up through branches toward the light, guests look down into a green depth, and the crowns of giant Brazil nut trees and cecropia spread out at eye level in a wide, complex horizontal landscape.
The platform is furnished for sleeping and observation: comfortable beds, mosquito netting, and a railing from which the forest can be watched at dawn. Dawn is the occasion guests rise early for. The shift from forest night to forest day is one of the great acoustic experiences in nature travel, as thousands of birds and amphibians change register simultaneously and the light moves from grey through green to gold. Macaws, toucans, and tanagers pass at eye level or above; howler monkeys declare territories from adjacent trees; and on clear mornings the mist rises through the canopy in layers.
The broader Inkaterra programme includes clay lick excursions at dawn to watch hundreds of macaws and parrots consuming mineral-rich clay, oxbow lake tours for giant river otter sightings, night caiman spotting on the Tambopata River, and guided walks focused on medicinal plants, insect life, or amphibians. The naturalist team holds university-level biology qualifications and brings the kind of ecological detail that turns a wildlife trip into a serious education. It is among the most rigorously managed ecotourism operations in the Amazon basin.
