Schloss Wehrburg is a medieval castle in Prissian, in the South Tyrol municipality of Tisens, run as a 3-star hotel. It sits at 600 metres on the Tisens plateau, and the hotel invites guests to feel like a knight or a lady of the castle among vaulted rooms and handsome façades.

History

The Wehrburg was built in the 13th century as an administrative seat by the Counts of Eppan of the Ulten line, and it also watched over the trade route that ran from the Adige valley over the Gampen Pass into the Nonsberg. The Lords of Wehrburg-Andrian are first named in 1229. After the Eppan-Ulten line died out the castle passed to the Prince-Bishopric of Trent, and Jakob Murenteiner received the fief in 1411.

The rooms

The castle has 20 rooms, from 15 to 47 square metres, made up of 3 singles and 17 doubles. Some are in the two towers and the rest in the palas, the long hall wing that holds most of the guest rooms.

The tower rooms are the most memorable. Each tower is 18 metres high, with guest rooms on three floors furnished in warm, stylish wood. They are reached only by spiral stairs, with 70 steps to the top, so luggage has to be carried up. The palas rooms are simply elegant, with historic furniture, medieval details and wall paintings in most rooms, and some have canopy beds.

There is no air conditioning, television or minibar in the rooms, a deliberate choice. Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and in the castle courtyard.

The pool and the view

The infinity pool looks across the Adige valley, and the same panorama can be enjoyed from the castle.

Season and practical notes

The hotel is seasonal. For 2026 it is open from 2 April to 25 October. The family hosts describe the house as a place of style, warmth, tradition and romance. If the steps are a concern, ask for a palas room rather than a tower room.

What’s included

  • Infinity pool
  • Free Wi-Fi in rooms and courtyard
