Why it’s on the list
- Grade I listed castle built in 1851 in the style of a medieval fortress
- 48 individually appointed bedrooms
- Tower Suites in the castle's towers
- 48-acre estate with woodland walks and formal gardens
- 1851 Restaurant open to residents and non-residents
Peckforton Castle was built in 1851 to recreate a medieval fortress, and it still reads as one: a Grade I listed Victorian Gothic stronghold in the Cheshire countryside, described by its owners as the only intact medieval-style castle in England. Today it works as a hotel, restaurant and events venue, and overnight guests sleep inside the walls rather than in a modern annexe.
The rooms
There are 48 individually appointed bedrooms, each with its own character rather than a uniform template. The most dramatic are the Tower Suites, set in the castle’s iconic towers. For larger parties there is also secluded group accommodation with hot tubs, a separate option for private groups.
The setting
The castle stands on a 48-acre estate of woodland walks and formal gardens. On a clear day the elevated position gives panoramic views stretching to the Welsh mountains. The grounds are a large part of the appeal, and guests can walk them freely during a stay. The castle has also been used as a location for film and television productions.
Eating and staying
The 1851 Restaurant is an award-winning fine dining room open to both residents and non-residents, so dinner can be part of the stay. WiFi, parking and access to the castle grounds are included with every castle stay. A year-round programme of ticketed events runs through the calendar, and the Land Rover Experience is offered on the estate.
Getting there
Peckforton sits about 20 minutes by car from Chester city centre, which makes it an easy base for the city and for the Cheshire countryside. It is a popular wedding venue, so weekends can be busy.
If you want the towers, ask for a Tower Suite when you book.
