Okonjima Bush Camp is the traditional safari camp on the Okonjima Nature Reserve, a 22,000-hectare private reserve in Namibia, set at the base of the Omboroko Mountains between Windhoek and Etosha National Park. Okonjima is family-owned and offers five different accommodation options; the Bush Camp is the one built around the classic safari setting.

The reserve

Okonjima began as a cattle farm that the Hanssen family bought in 1970, grew into a guest farm and then became a private nature reserve of about 220 square kilometres. The family found they could protect their calves while conserving the predators, and the reserve is today home to the AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit founded in 1991 that carries out research and conservation work. The reserve is known for leopard and pangolin tracking.

What guests do

The camp offers guided game drives and nature trails on foot, and leopard tracking. Sundowners in the acacia thornveld are part of the evening.

Getting there

Okonjima is a 2.5-hour drive from Windhoek, or one hour by air. The plateau sits at about 1,700 metres.

Choosing a stay

Because the reserve offers five types of accommodation, make sure you book the Bush Camp specifically if the traditional safari-camp setting is what you want. The reserve sits between Windhoek and Etosha National Park, so it fits naturally into a longer Namibian route. The AfriCat Foundation has carried out research and conservation work on the reserve since 1992. Ask the reserve which activities are included on your dates.
