Melville Castle

Melville Castle is a three-storey Gothic mansion in Lasswade, in Midlothian, just under a mile from Dalkeith and near the River North Esk. The castle stands in a private 54-acre estate, reached by a tree-lined drive, and Edinburgh is about a 30-minute drive away. It reopened as a hotel after a restoration and is part of The Original Collection.

The rooms

There are 33 bedrooms and suites, each unique. Many have four-poster beds, and all have been revamped in a dramatic style. Some are tucked beneath the turrets. The castle also has dog-friendly rooms and family-friendly stays, so it welcomes more than couples. Check-in begins at 15:00. Stays booked direct include a complimentary full Scottish breakfast each morning.

The castle’s character

The restoration has given every corner a nod to the castle’s regal past, and Mary Queen of Scots used to visit. From the striking reception to the eclectic Library Bar, the interiors are theatrical. Afternoon tea is served daily from 14:00 to 17:00, and there is a restaurant as well as a bar.

Grounds

In the grounds, visitors can search for Queen Mary’s five oak trees. The enchanted setting is a big part of the appeal. A private car park is provided for guests.
