Langley Castle Hotel

Langley Castle is a restored medieval tower house in the valley of the River South Tyne in Northumberland, three miles south of Haydon Bridge. It was built in 1364 in an H shape with four floors and a tower at each corner, and it is a Grade I listed building. Its walls are up to seven feet thick, which gives the interior a very particular stillness.

Where to sleep

Only part of the hotel is in the castle, so it matters which room you book. Nine individually styled rooms sit within the main castle. They feature four-poster beds, window seats set deep into ancient stone, and original fireplaces, and some have spa baths or saunas. A further 19 dog-friendly rooms are in Castle View, a short walk away; many have views of the castle and suit families or longer stays. There is also a self-catering two-bedroom villa, the Toll Bar Luxury Villa.

Food and the castle itself

The Josephine Restaurant is award winning and serves candle-lit fine dining in the 14th-century setting. Private dining is available in the Pavilion, for up to 30 guests. A battlements tour runs daily at 10:15am, and the castle stands in ten acres of private gardens and woodland.

Getting around

The castle is close to the best portions of Hadrian’s Wall, as well as Vindolanda and Northumberland National Park, and near the Scottish border. The address is Langley, Hexham, Northumberland NE47 5LU.
