Hazlewood Castle & Spa

Hazlewood Castle is a Grade I listed country residence, now a hotel, in North Yorkshire. It sits between York and Leeds, near Tadcaster, and is one of the oldest fortified houses to survive in Yorkshire. The castle dates back to the Domesday Book, and it stands in 77 acres of woodland.

Where you sleep

The hotel has 32 rooms and suites, but not all are in the castle. Nine spacious rooms and suites are in the main castle, with views of the gardens and gallops. St Margaret’s, over the bridge in the courtyard, has 12 quiet rooms suited to families and guests with pets, and St Leonard’s, through a secret door, has 11 more. Room types run from Standard Doubles to Superior Rooms, Suites and Master Suites. For a special occasion, the Four Poster rooms and the Vavasour rooms are spacious and full of character. Free WiFi is available in the bedrooms and public areas. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by 10:30am.

Spa and dining

The thermal spa has a Finnish sauna, an aroma steam room and a raindrop shower, with treatments by the hotel’s therapists. Dinner is served in the Vavasour Restaurant.

The woodland estate offers adventure activities as well as weddings and events. Getting here takes some planning: the nearest train station is Church Fenton, four miles away, so you will need a taxi. The address is Paradise Lane, Tadcaster, North Yorkshire LS24 9NJ.
