Why it’s on the list
- 28 self-catering units, each with en-suite bathroom, veranda and kitchenette
- About 5 km from the entrance gate to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
- Camel thorn trees shade the camp, with views over desert and mountains
- Communal bomas, pool and bar
Desert Camp sits on the edge of the Namib Desert in southern Namibia, only about 5 km from the entrance gate to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. It is a self-catering camp, so the idea is a base of your own from which to visit the dunes, rather than a lodge that runs the day for you.
The units
There are 28 individual self-catering units, designed to blend in with the landscape. Each has a spacious air-conditioned bedroom, an en-suite bathroom, a shaded veranda with a fitted kitchenette and barbecue, power points, a patio and private parking. Note that they are bungalow-style units rather than tents.
The setting
The camp is nestled under camel thorn trees that the camp describes as centuries old, with views over the desert landscape and the surrounding mountains. The main building has a fully stocked bar with a big-screen television and a swimming pool, and two communal bomas give groups a place to gather in the evening. Wi-Fi is available at the bar and pool area, but not in the units.
Practical notes
Own transport is required, as no shuttles or transfers are available. That suits travellers who are driving a Namibian circuit anyway. Groups can make use of the communal bomas and amenities, and the camp promotes its facilities for groups.
Desert Camp suits self-catering travellers, families and anyone who wants to be close to Sossusvlei for sunrise. Bring your own groceries, since the units are set up for cooking. The shaded veranda of each unit is where most meals will happen, and the private parking next to it keeps the logistics simple for a self-drive trip.
