Castello la Leccia is an organic estate and charming agriturismo in Chianti Classico, near Castellina in Chianti in the province of Siena. The castle is the heart of the property, with rooms, reception halls, a restaurant, a pool, a spa and other services at guests’ disposal.

History

Written sources mention Castello La Leccia as early as 1077, when the nobleman Rodolfo di Guinzo bought a part of it. Its strategic position meant that rights over the castle were once divided among as many as sixteen owners, and from the middle of the 1400s the Ricasoli family held sway here, as they did over much of the Chianti Classico. Letters from Andrea Ricasoli in 1529, during the wars between Siena and Florence, record raiders burning the house and spilling some two hundred barrels of wine. In the 18th century, when about 70 people lived in the castle’s village, part of the structure was altered to look more like a villa.

The rooms

The estate has 12 rooms of three types, ranging from 21 to 55 square metres, with views over the surrounding countryside. They are elegantly furnished and designed to be intimate. The hotel markets itself as a place to rejuvenate body and mind, with packages for honeymoon couples, gourmet stays, yoga and relaxation.

The estate

The panoramic pool, open from May to September, overlooks vineyards and olive groves. The olives come from the organic groves around the castle, from trees about fifteen years old of Tuscan varieties such as Leccino, Correggiolo and Moraiolo. They are pressed at the mill on the day of harvest by cold extraction. Wine tasting tours are also on offer.
