Why it’s on the list

  • Medieval castle turned into a historic residence (residenza d’epoca)
  • Eighteen rooms, each with its own story
  • Romantic room with original frescoes and panoramic windows
  • Three kilometres from the historic centre of Perugia

Castello di Monterone is a small restored 13th-century castle on the road that links Perugia to Assisi through Ponte San Giovanni. It was converted into a residenza d’epoca, a historic residence, and now has eighteen rooms furnished in keeping with its history. It stands among greenery about three kilometres from the old centre of Perugia.

The rooms

The eighteen rooms are grouped into types: Standard, Classic, Superior, Family, Panoramic and Romantic. Many carry names taken from the castle’s past, such as Camera dell’Angiolo, L’Altana, La Segreta, La Giota, Camera delle Armi, Camera del Rosone and Camera dell’Etrusco. The hotel says that each room tells its own story. The Romantic room is described as having original frescoes and panoramic windows.

Every room has a private bathroom, Wi-Fi and air conditioning, so the medieval stonework comes with the comforts of a modern hotel room.

The setting

The castle lies close to the Monastery of San Pietro and the Church of San Bevignate, along one of the old royal roads that led out of Perugia through the city gates, on a route already used in Etruscan and Roman times. That history is part of the appeal for anyone who likes to sleep inside the layers of a place rather than next to them.

Planning a stay

Perugia’s historic centre is a short drive away, and Assisi lies along the same road. If you want a particular type of room, such as one of the frescoed or panoramic rooms, ask when you book.
