Castello di Casamassella

Castello di Casamassella is a historic castle in Casamassella, a village in Apulia’s Salento peninsula, not far from Otranto. Rather than a large hotel, it offers six rooms: five exclusive suites and one double room, spread across the different floors of the castle.

The rooms

The rooms are named after parts and people of the castle: Bastione (a Classic Room), Stemma (Superior Suite), Cavalieri (Junior Suite), Torre (Deluxe Suite), Padronale (Deluxe Suite) and Campana (Superior Suite with a terrace). Each has its own outdoor space. By design, the suites have neither a television nor a telephone, so the stay is built around quiet. Wi-Fi is available in all the outdoor areas.

Breakfast and the pool

Days begin with a generous breakfast that the castle is proud of, including homemade cakes. There is a pool area for guests, and the castle’s website also points to its park and terrace as part of the stay.

Beyond the walls

The castle stands in the middle of Casamassella, on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, and it also hosts events and weddings. The Salento coast around Otranto is close, which makes it easy to alternate between a quiet castle and the beaches and old towns of the heel of Italy.

Before you go

With only six rooms, the castle fills quickly in high season. If a terrace matters to you, ask about Campana, and if you want to be reachable by phone, remember that the suites have no landline. The park around the castle is part of the stay, and the coast near Otranto is close enough for a day trip.
