Borgo Castello Panicaglia

Borgo Castello Panicaglia occupies a castle built in 1266 in the small medieval village of Panicaglia, in Umbria. It sits at 800 metres, with views across the Umbrian mountains, and runs as a guesthouse where guests are invited to take part in family life: look into the kitchen, help in the vegetable garden, or settle into one of the many lounge spots.

The rooms

The castle has an unusually long list of rooms, each with its own name. They range from doubles and triples to luxury suites and family suites. The Raffaele room is a 35 m² double with a luxury bathroom and a small private terrace on the first floor of the main building. Angelo is a 45 m² luxury suite with its own entrance, Mariastella is a 55 m² family suite for five, and Cardinale Pietro Marini is a 60 m² deluxe suite for two to four. Giovanni is a 35 m² double suitable for guests with reduced mobility. Some neighbouring rooms, such as Raffaele and Caterina, can be linked to form a four-person suite.

Every room has a private bathroom and tea and coffee facilities, and prices include breakfast. Thick walls and wooden-beam ceilings are part of the character, along with views over the Umbrian hills.

Food and activities

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cooking classes and wine tastings are offered, and a programme of activities runs during the summer holidays. There is a swimming pool, open from April to October, a playground, and bikes to rent for rides through the surrounding countryside. Wi-Fi is available throughout the borgo.

Getting around

Panicaglia is about 25 kilometres from Assisi, which makes it a quiet base for exploring Umbria by car.
